Saturday in the Park

Saturday in the Park

Nothing, my friends.

We're on Day Two of The Beautiful: upper 80s, plenty of sunshine, and all day to enjoy it because The Beautiful finally fell on a weekend instead of popping up on a Thursday to taunt me. I spent the majority of the afternoon in Central Park, strolling under the cherry blossoms along the reservoir and watching all the dogs and people and bikers and bird watchers and toddling babies.

And now I'm going out again to fill my vitamin D reservoir before I get chained to the phone for eight hours for the next five days.

Ta!

Actually, no. What happened is that I haven't been filling the well. Julia Cameron encourages artists to keep replenishing their "well of creativity." We can't keep running on empty, churning out work without suffering the consequences, i.e. burnout, writer's block, addictive behaviors.

The workshop was a source of creative energy for me, and now that it's over, I have to go elsewhere for creative juice. I haven't been doing that. I've been freaking out about my financial situation. I'm going to stop doing that now.

For today's refill, I think I'll walk in Central Park. (Yes, it's cold, but I'm from Minnesota and I'm not scurred.) I would love to watch a dance class, but you can't get into the dancing area of Broadway Dance Center without paying for a class. Maybe I could go to Port Authority bus station, go up to one of the upper levels and watch class at Alvin Ailey. Eh. Too much work. I would also like to bake something, but my oven is still not functioning. Poop.

What are you doing to fill your creative well?

List

It's a beautiful day outside. The downside is that it's below 40 degrees and will stay there for the rest of the day.

I was really productive yesterday. Today, I don't know where to begin.

I'm only three days behind on my novel. Which equals 5001 words. Which is doable; if I felt like doing anything other than descending into a vegetative state and munching popcorn.

I'm the old lady of my building: I actually poked my ceiling with a broom handle to remind my upstairs neighbor that he either needs to walk more softly or buy a rug.

Despite the lack of sound-proofing and the occasional antenna-wearing invaders and the smell of other people's food, this isn't a bad apartment. I'm thankful that I'm indoors now that it's cold, and that the heat isn't my financial responsibility.

Which leads me to the flip side, yet again: how will I afford to keep living here if jobs that pay a living wage are so elusive? It's exhausting to look at page after page of job ads that pay $10, $11, or $12 an hour, or even less than $10.

News flash! The economy sucks.

I pat myself on the back for being diligent about checking in weekly with my temp and permanent placement agencies.

I sigh when they write back "Thanks!" instead of "Here's a job!"

Anyone want to hire a brilliant, creative, problem-solving, computer savvy writer and admin genius?

My bamboo looks unhappy.

I just had an idea that could be lucrative, if I could get my idea to the people who need it. Hm... I need a marketing genius.

I really want a pet. I look at icanhascheezburger.com and every other picture I say, "Awww!" I pass Pocket Pooches NYC and I always stop and stare at the teeny tiny balls of fluffy puppy goodness and my heart breaks that I can't have one. Yes, yes: animals are expensive and messy and aggravating. The same can be said for children, and people keep having those anyway. The moment I reach financial solvency, I'm getting a pet.

A roach (a BIG one) was crawling on my desk this morning. Jerk. THERE'S NO FOOD THERE. LEAVE ME ALONE.

It's time to stop talking about silicone caulk and act. I will purchase some tonight and attack the cracks tomorrow.

I'm at the yoga studio at the moment. There's chill music, no one else is here, and the internet is not blocked. Suh-weet. I'm attempting to enjoy this time and not think too much about roaches I can't see or control. (It's not working so well.)

I feel icky. It's rainy and cold. I have to find another job.

Stupid roaches.
Stupid rain.
Stupid economy.

I named him Archimedes after the owl in Sword & the Stone, a blustery, stuffy, fussy little fellow who was always something of a mess despite the exactitude he wished to project.

Autumn invigorates me. Winter slows everything down, spring makes me itchy, summer lulls me to sleep, and fall makes me want to run around in circles in a field until I fall down. I love fall. I love the clothes I get to wear in fall. Tights, wool skirts, sweaters, scarves. Like I said, I'm a romantic.

Sooo! I want to do NaNoWriMo this year, but I'm supposed to be studying for the LSAT as well. Hm. Can I do it? I really want to. I feel like the daily writing and sharing is good practice, and I want to keep up the habit. NaNoWriMo is a great way to do that. But I also know that I'm not one of the disciplined ones who writes her 1667 words each day. I delay and delay and delay and end up freaking out the second-to-last week of November thinking, "Holy crap! Where did the time go? I'm never going to finish! But I must!" And sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. But if I want to write, I have to do the work, right? So I will do the work.

NaNoWriMo is great because you're given permission (by the "powers that be" over there somewhere in California, and thousands of other NaNoers) to write badly and without restraint. Of course, everyone would love for their novel to be brilliant, but no one's novel is brilliant on the first draft. So NaNo says, "Go ahead and be bad. Just get the story out. You can go back and edit later. Don't beat yourself up about the astronomical crappiness right now." I love that.

Bah. I've gotta get out of my house and enjoy this lovely autumn day. Ciao, chickens!

But I'm not outside. I'm inside, and in a few minutes I will go take a shower because, in an hour, I need to leave for work. Where I'll sit in a basement for the next five hours, drinking coffee to stay awake, freezing and going a little crazy from the florescent lights. Eight more days. Eight more days. Eight more days.

Yesterday morning was beautiful, though, and I was glad to be up and about in it. The air was dry, really dry, for the first time since May. It was dry enough that my skin started to itch when I got out of the shower. I thought, "Why am I itchy? Oh yeah! This is what low humidity feels like! I need lotion!" I briefly considered moving to the desert so that I could experience that sensation on a regular basis.

Today is still cool, dry, and brilliantly sunny. August, you amaze me!

I suppose it's the same for cigarette addicts: the chemicals are only a small part of the experience of smoking a cigarette. The rest of the activity is just as addictive.

I have a day off today. That means I run around doing all the things I don't do when I have to work later. For instance, today I'll be attending a workshop for actors looking for side work. Maybe they'll give me some ideas.

I also have to attend a diversity training class at my part-time job. *gag* I know it's important, but corporate diversity training classes tend to be...lame. (See: "Diversity Day" episode of The Office.) I believe this one is simply a matter of compliance with federal blah dee blahs. We sign in, watch a video, and leave. "Hooray. I am now extremely knowledgeable about workplace diversity and will never offend anyone ever again. This 30-minute video has given me the tools I need to succeed in my diversification endeavors."

Went to a free concert in Central Park yesterday. It was good to get out of the house, even if it drizzled on us most of the time. I'm just glad we didn't get the brunt of the storm, because there sure were some yellows and reds on the radar passing just south of the city. We simply enjoyed the benefits: an afternoon high of 77 degrees. Haven't experienced that since June, or maybe even May. And it seems to be lingering today. Rockin.

So far it reminds me quite a bit of The Artist's Way, but I like having something to work on. I like working on me.

Hope everyone's Fourth of July was fun! I got a surprise visit from a friend as I was leaving work, so we hung out there for a while instead of looking at fireworks with a bunch of other wet (it rained), sweaty people. And fun was had by all.

I'm feeling a little loopy today.

It poured this afternoon! I was standing on the express platform of the 34th St A/C/E station - after leaving the church I'd visited - when thunder cracked in the sky above. The sound and smell of rain filled the station. I was moseying down the platform to get closer to the staircase I'd need at 14th St when I noticed a cascade of water falling from the ceiling. The rain left a curtain between the local tracks and platform. On the tracks below was another wonder: a fountain in the subway. I tried to take pictures with my phone but they don't do it justice.

As I boarded the train I was able to see that the force of water gushing out of a pipe on the tracks was the cause of the fountain. It was unexpected and beautiful because it was unexpected.

I got my New York license. W00t! It came quickly. I just applied last week and it arrived two days ago. Overall, I have to commend the NY DMV. Yeah, I had to stand in line, and fill out forms, and shuffle around like cattle in a pen, and the whole experience took an hour and a half, but overall? They moved as quickly as they could, they kept their senses of humor, they are efficient, and I thought it was pretty painless. Congrats, New York DMV: you beat the stereotype.

It's going to be a hot one today, which is why I'm staying in my skivvies as long as possible before I have to suit up to leave the house. The weekend looks stormy but Monday should be fair and pleasant.

---------

I am in the midst of reading a John Guare play titled Marco Polo Sings a Solo. I can't recall having ever experienced Mr. Guare's writing before this, and it's odd. As an actor, all I can think about is, "How would I, if I were cast, make sense of these words?" I'll admit that it's daunting. I imagine, though, if I had the time and opportunity to play with them, they - the words - would eventually make themselves make sense, and I wouldn't have to force anything on them. I can't say I'd jump at the chance to perform in this particular play, though. It's good, but not my cup of tea.

Speaking of performing, Ishy-girl, I have finished my spreadsheet for my headshot mailing. Celebrate with me, just for a moment, with a little chair dance. What does this "finishing my spreadsheet" mean, you ask? It means that I am now organized to start firing off letters and headshots to casting agencies. I am taking my baby steps. W00t, again!

Container from The Container Store

Oh, I had such high hopes for today's blog. I'm pooped, though. Probably going to take out my contacts and go to bed within the next ten minutes.

It was a gorgeous day. I discovered a new park by the water, reunited with a high school friend I haven't seen in 11 years, and had delicious meals for lunch and dinner.

And I'm sun-drained and pooped.

I have a catering gig tomorrow evening at the Central Park Zoo. That should be fun. I get to be outside and see the zoo for free - or at least a part of it - and earn some money while I'm doing it.

This gig was a good excuse for me to buy an American Apparel t-shirt. I didn't try it on in the store because I was hot and sweaty and fumbling with clothes was the last thing I wanted to do. I tried it on this morning, and dude, it's one of the most comfortable things I've ever put on my body. I want like, seven more in every color. Fortunately for my pocketbook they're $16, so I won't be getting seven more. Maybe just one. Or two.

So ConEd decided to turn off the gas yesterday. They're working on something on the corner. I thought, "Dangit! I was just about to cook my greens. Boo." I settled for a peanut butter sandwich instead.

Today, the gas is still off. And an unfortunate side effect is that we have no hot water. The water heater (or boiler, whatever it is) is gas-powered. Which means that I gasped my way through the coldest - and quickest - shower I've ever taken.

Please hurry and finish, ConEd. Most of my food is only consumable after it's been cooked, and I'm running out of peanut butter and yogurt.

I don't know what to call this one

I eat eggs for breakfast almost every day. I use the same plate and fork. I always add salt and black pepper. The only variation is whether or not I add green pepper and/or onion. And that depends on whether or not I've chopped anything in the past week.

I finally chopped some onion and green pepper today.

Moving Day

I've almost been in my new apartment for one full week.  It's a lovely place, although its imperfections are beginning to show.  I can hear when someone comes in the front door, I think my upstairs neighbor is a fitness buff who does sort of loud exercises on the floor at 6am, and my downstairs neighbor is a smoker and the lovely scent (that's sarcasm) of cigarettes wafts up through my radiator and drifts right across the place where I sit at my desk to head level when I'm lying in bed.  Awesome.  But really?  For what I get, the neighborhood I get to live in, and the fact that I get to live alone, what I'm paying is an amazing deal.

So I moved on the 28th.  I woke up at 6:30 to wash my sheets and towels and deflate my bed.  (Yup.  Still sleeping on an Aerobed.) After everything came out of the dryer I hit the subway to ride to Brooklyn and sign my lease. It's about an hour from Harlem to Brooklyn, what with waiting for trains, and transferring between lines. I signed the lease, paid my first month's rent, got the keys, made sure they worked, and ran back to the subway again to meet the movers.  I had scheduled the appointment at 1pm, but the confirmation email said that they might arrive an hour prior or an hour after that time.  It was 11:00 when I got on the train back to Harlem.

I made it back to my apartment by noon and continued packing the last little bits of stuff scattered around my room.  For those who have ever moved, have you noticed that when you feel like you're done packing, there are still little bits of bric-a-brac laying around and you have no idea where they came from but you must use them so you have to find a place to put them?  Yeah, I usually just throw them in an available bag and keep moving.  I should just throw them away or give them a proper home, but that never happens.  You'd think I'd learned after five moves in five months.  Nope.

1:00 rolled around, no movers.  2:00, still no movers.  I called the company to ask if they were on their way, and the receptionist assured me that they were, it's just that the rain had slowed everything way down.  (Oh, yeah, I didn't mention that the day was blustery and rainy.  It's absolutely beautiful outside for two weeks, and the day I move, it decides to pour.)  I assured her that I wasn't mad, just wanted to make sure that they were still on their way.

At 4:30, the movers finally came.  They were sweaty, and their English wasn't great, but they were polite and fast.  I was amazed at how quickly they were able to get all of my things out with just two men and a dolly.  In fact, the younger guy (he looked like he was still in high school) stayed with the truck and the older man moved everything out into the hall and down the elevator.  I felt a little guilty just standing there, but I was paying for them to move me.

Once my pile of belongings was gone, I double-checked the bathroom, my bedroom, and the living room for anything left behind (other than things I had intentionally left), and I headed downstairs.  I made sure they knew where they were going and hit the subway again.  This ride was a little tougher on me as it was rush hour and kids were getting out of school and being obnoxious (that's a whole other blog).

I know I've spent too much time in the subway when I start to get irritated when someone's bag brushes me.  And this time I had my rolling cart with two bags on it, my messenger bag over my shoulder, and a plastic bag in my hand.  People don't seem to understand that when you have a lot of stuff, you need more space.  I had to push my way out of the subway car and I'm sure I smacked a few people with my bags, but when they won't move, that's their issue, not mine.

Once in Brooklyn I trucked to my apartment to wait for the movers.  In the meantime I took a few pictures and inspected the place to make sure there wasn't anything egregiously wrong.  There's a hole in the ceiling in the kitchen, and there's a strange open pipe in the bathroom that I believe connects to the tub's piping somehow, but other than that, it's fine.

It grew darker, and finally the movers showed up.  I ran to the bank to get cash to pay them while they worked and discovered that I live on a really pleasant street, even in the rain and cold.  I was gone for about 15 minutes, and by the time I got back everything but the desk was in my apartment.  They were finished by 7:00pm; not bad.  So other than being rather late, I would recommend Olga Movers to anyone who wanted an inexpensive move across town with some non-surly dudes.  Look 'em up on Craigslist.

The rest of the Moving Day tale continues tomorrow...

It's freezing in here.

The temperature dropped last night, drastically, and now my room is FREEZING. The radiators ran all morning, but now they're off, and I don't understand why. They ran them all day when people are out at work, but they turn them off when people are actually going to be home? How does this make sense? I slept fully-clothed (tights and socks) and with all four of my blankets last night and I was still cold. *sigh* I hope I don't have to repeat that tonight.

Ugh.

Hot. Hot hot sticky hot. Hoooooooooooottttttt. ttt.

It's hot in Minnesota these days. It's been hot for a while. A friend brought to my attention the fact that we haven't had that many pleasant, 75 and dry days in the Twin Cities this summer, and I realized that he was right. What are these long stretches of sunny weather without rain? That would be great if we lived in California and it was supposed to be all droughty all the time, but we don't. There are people who grow things here and they'd like some rain, please. As would I, because rain after it's hot usually means cool and dry follows. And hot means, for me, no playing outside. I don't enjoy being a sweaty mess when I have somewhere else to be. Going home immediately to take a shower? Great. Having to sit in a theatre in close proximity to other folks for at least an hour? Not cool. Literally.

I'm in a coffee shop and I think I'm not punk enough to be here. I came directly from an audition where I had to look "funky hot," so I'm all dolled up, makeup and all. Everyone else? Dressed down and a little frayed around the edges. Oh well.

I've been away from the house quite a bit and haven't had a lot of down time this week and last, so I'm glad to be sitting in a coffee shop and only intermittently working.

Basilica Block Party

My friend Nate's band, 2 Wurds, was one of the finalists for the Basilica Block Party Battle of the Bands, and they ended up being one of two winners. Nate asked me to work the merch table for them, and in exchange, I got into the concert for free. Sweet!

Originally I didn't have a guest pass and thus did not get to go hang out backstage with 2 Wurds. However Clarence - who's real name is Nate - did a little wrangling at the press booth and I got a media pass, which enabled me to saunter on backstage and hang out with the cool kids. Woo! Backstage! Thing was, it was so nasty out that the other bands kept to their air conditioned tour buses when they weren't performing. After G. Love's set, though, he came out to sign autographs and take pictures.

It's snowing.

It's snowing in April. I'm disappointed, but not surprised. Those of us who have lived here the majority of our lives know that this, this snow, is not out of the realm of possibility. We grimace and bear it, as usual.

I keep telling people that when I was in school in NC, that at this time of year the Gardens would be cranked up to Full Springtime Max! and all the flowers would be out and showing off, trying to outdo the flowers next to them, and the wisteria climbing on the gazebo was a purple haze (not Purple Haze capitals, silly), and everything smelled great. The ground was still a little wet, but it always was, and a thick blanket was the solution to that. Finals came at just the right time of year in NC, because nothing was more conducive to nappi- I mean, studying, than a garden in full bloom. I think the Gardens are the only part of Duke I really miss.

run-on sentence

Rain is not so fun when one wants to play outisde, as I do today. But rain is fun when you have a little time to yourself to do quiet work, and everyone else in the house is doing quiet work, and there's not television blaring mindless noise into your ears, and no one talking on the phone in a loud, obstreperous manner, and it's almost like the perfect library, i.e. a library that has a kitchen full of food and coffee and other good tasting munchies, and all you want to do is sit quietly and do your quiet work with other quiet people and you can. Because it's raining. Yay for rain!

This white stuff coming from the sky? God's way of telling us to take a day off.

Look. I've lived in Minnesnowta most of my life. I understand that it is cold here. I understand that it snows a lot; well, a lot more than other parts of the country (we haven't had the crazy amounts of snow I remember from my schoolkid days). We get snow, and we have experience dealing with snow.

Which is exactly why I think Minnesota needs to chill out when it comes to days like these.

gearing up for the blizzard

They made the Metro area students (Minneapolis and St. Paul and surrounding suburbs) go to school, knowing full well that we would have near blizzard conditions by the time these kids get out of school, and run the risk that buses would get stuck in the snow with children on them somewhere on their route, making parents worry and think very hard about lawsuits.

Just chill out, Minnesota. We've barely had any preventative weather conditions in the last three years. It's not as though students have been missing school for that reason. If they miss a day or two, the world is not going to end. And what are they really missing, anyway? Test preparation? (Thank you very much, No Child Left Behind.) Please. Just let them stay home.

And let their parents stay home with them. I know adults dread snow days because it means that they have to interact with their children for 24 hours. But let's weigh the pros and cons here. You can try to keep everything proceeding as normal and take the chance that people aren't going to make it in to work anyway, that people are going to come into work ornery and frazzled because it took them three hours to get there and their hands were clenched on the steering wheel the entire time, or that someone will have a serious accident and die. You can let everyone stay home and relax, possibly getting cabin fever but otherwise safe. You'd lose a productive day, but SO WHAT.

I have my own selfish reasons for wanting school to be cancelled, being that I don't want to go to work today, but I never claimed not to.
